Created during the Cold War, the 5.45x39mm M74 was developed to outperform the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge. The Ak74 was also designed around this ammunition, which has become the standard of the Russian army.
The goal was to provide a small caliber ammunition, high velocity and a more extended arrow, with a reduced size, allowing the carriage of a greater number of ammunition per soldier.
It is a low recoil caliber, with excellent precision.
